ER AWARD OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE – UNN 2017

On the third day of February 2017, the department of Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus marked the 11th induction/swearing ceremony of her 2015/2016 graduands at the Vinn’s Hall Gardenia Guest House, Independence Layout Enugu. The day was graced by distinguished guests amongst whom were the representative of Prof. Smart Uchegbu the Deputy Vice Chancellor University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, Dr. David Iheanacho; Prof. Ijeoma Ehiemerie, the Dean Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, Dr S.O.I. Ogbu – Head of Department Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences, Prof. K. K. Agwu, Dr Okpaleke – Registrar Radiographer’s Registration Board of Nigeria, Dr (Mrs.) F.U. Idigo- Immediate Past Head of the Department of Medical Radiography, Mrs Balogun – President Association of Radiographers of Nigeria, Dr N. O. Egbe of the University of Calabar amongst others. ER was also part of the event.

The event began with a procession of the graduands into the arena after which the Master of Ceremonies, Mr Lorenzo Tochukwu Menakaya, introduced the distinguished guests to the high table. Dr S.O.I. Ogbu, the Head of Department, in his welcome address thanked all who accepted the invitation to attend the ceremony. He noted that one of the priorities of the department is to train multi-skilled radiographers with high degree of competence and safety in the practice of radiography. He congratulated the inductees, their parents/guardians and charged the inductees to be bold, courageous and to do their best as they pursue their individual dreams in radiography practice. The induction lecture was delivered by the guest lecturer Dr. N. O. Egbe (an Associate Professor of the Department of Radiography, University of Calabar) on the “The Radiographer and the 21st Century Economy”. The lecture was an eye opener to not only the inductees but everyone present. He highlighted the importance of entrepreneurial radiography alongside its benefits while bringing to light the core importance and functions of a radiographer. Mrs Ola Balogun, the ARN President, further buttressed this point in her address critically emphasizing the need for the young inductees to make the profession proud wherever they find themselves. Other addresses were presented by the Dean of the Faculty and the representative of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Highlights of the event were the swearing in proper of the graduands into the profession by the Registrar of the RRBN, the valedictory speech by the best graduating student of the year and the presentation of awards. ER Publisher presented an award of excellence to the best graduating student of the session – Onoh, Theodorah Ijeoma who also got her name written on the wall of fame as the first student to graduate with a first class since the inception of the department. The award was presented on-behalf of ER by the Head of Department, Dr S.O.I. Ogbu. Another award of excellence which included a cash price worth the provisional licensing fee of the board was presented by the RRBN Registrar to the best graduating student of the session.

It indeed was a memorable day for all and sundry who participated in the professional event. The ceremony came to a close with a recession after the photo session of the newly inducted radiographers and the distinguished guests.
